LYST sauna with Thon Hotel Svolvær in the background

A modern five-star waterfront hotel with a floating sauna on the dock, an excellent breakfast, and the best location in Svolvær.

Opened in 2021, Thon Hotel Svolvær is the newest large hotel in Lofoten's biggest town, and it looks the part. Floor-to-ceiling glass, contemporary Nordic interiors, 211 rooms spread across a waterfront building right on the quay. If you're driving into Svolvær and see a big, modern glass hotel on the harbour, that's it.

One thing to know before you arrive: Thon Hotel Lofoten, the older sister property, is a two-minute walk down the same waterfront. Double-check the address.

The floating sauna

The standout here is the LYST Lofoten Sauna, a floating sauna on the dock directly in front of the hotel. Two saunas, changing rooms, a diving board off the roof, and stairs into the Vestfjord for cold plunges. It's open from 7 AM to 1 AM and you look straight out at the mountains and harbour while you sweat. Swimwear is mandatory. You need to book a session in advance, hotel guests get a discounted rate, but it's not included in the room price.

Rooms

Standard rooms start around 23 square metres with floor-to-ceiling windows and a pair of binoculars for watching the harbour. But the difference between room categories matters here. Standard rooms get a basic kettle. Upgrade to a Superior or Business room and you get a Nespresso machine, bathrobe, and slippers.

The three Ice Tower Suites are 50 square metres with panoramic views of the Vestfjord, the best rooms in Svolvær if you want to splurge.

Soundproofing between adjoining rooms is inconsistent. During peak summer, this can be a problem. Ask for a room that doesn't share a wall with the next unit, or request a higher floor facing the water where it tends to be quieter.

Breakfast and dining

Breakfast is included and it's one of the better hotel breakfasts in northern Norway. Big buffet with local specialities, fresh pastries, solid gluten-free and vegetarian options. The kind of spread that makes you eat a bit more and skip lunch.

The on-site restaurant, Brasseriet, does a sharing-style Nordic menu and wood-fired pizza. The pizza is surprisingly good. In summer, the outdoor quayside seating fills up with locals and guests alike. For a proper fine dining meal, walk two minutes to Paleo Arctic at the sister property Thon Hotel Lofoten, the best restaurant in town. Du Verden, five minutes on foot, is strong on seafood. Bacalao is three minutes away for a casual harbour-side drink.

Getting there and parking

The hotel is located right in the centre of Svolvær, on the water. The Hurtigruten terminal and main bus station are 500 metres away. Svolvær Airport at Helle is about 6 km out, a short taxi ride, or you can take the Line 300 bus for a fraction of the cost.

Parking is the hotel's weakest point. There's on-site parking, but spaces are limited and it's first come, first served with a surcharge. In summer, you may end up parking a few hundred metres away.

What else is in the building

The lobby has free Nespresso coffee and sparkling water all day. Small gym on the second floor. There's a fish-filleting room where you can clean your catch after a fishing trip, plus a rooftop greenhouse growing herbs for the kitchen.

In winter, the harbour-facing rooms give you a front-row seat for northern lights without leaving your bed.

Alternatives in Svolvær

Thon Hotel Lofoten is the older sister property, two minutes down the waterfront. Smaller, with more of a traditional Lofoten feel compared to the glass-and-steel newness of Thon Hotel Svolvær. The breakfast is bigger and better, so if dining matters more to you than the floating sauna, staying here puts you closer to the best kitchen in town.

Svinøya Rorbuer is the heritage option. Converted fishermen's cabins on the island just across the bridge from central Svolvær, with the kind of atmosphere that a 211-room modern hotel can't replicate. You trade some convenience and consistency for character, and you're cooking your own meals in most of the cabins. Good if you want to feel like you're staying in Lofoten rather than at a hotel in Lofoten.

Anker Brygge splits the difference. It's rorbuer-style accommodation but with more polish and hotel-level amenities, right on the Svolvær waterfront. Rooms are individually styled and generally larger than what you get at Thon Hotel Svolvær for a comparable rate.

Thon Hotel Svolvær should be your choice if you want the newest facilities, the floating sauna, and a reliable full-service hotel experience. Pick Svinøya if atmosphere and self-catering independence matter more. Pick Anker Brygge if you want the rorbuer look with fewer compromises on comfort.

The LYST floating sauna requires advance booking and isn't included in the room rate. Hotel guests get a discount. Book your session early, especially in summer, as slots fill fast.
