Fløibanen

A six-minute funicular ride from Bergen's center to a 320-meter summit with panoramic views over the city, fjords, and islands, plus direct access to a network of hiking trails.

A funicular railway that climbs 320 meters from Bergen's center to the top of Mount Fløyen in about six minutes. Glass-roofed carriages. Unobstructed sightlines the whole way up. At the summit, a large viewing platform opens onto the city below, the surrounding fjords, and a scatter of islands. On a clear day, you can pick out individual boats in the harbor and trace the colorful wooden facades along Bryggen.

Summer midday queues regularly exceed an hour, especially when cruise ships are in port. Buying tickets on the official app skips the ticket office line but not the boarding line. Go before 9:00 AM or after 6:00 PM.

A network of well-marked trails fans out from the top station. Short loops work for a casual stroll. The Vidden trail connects all the way to Mount Ulriken for a full-day hike. In summer, cashmere goats graze near the upper station. The Troll Forest and playground are geared toward kids.

Going Down

Skip the return queue. Buy a one-way ticket up and walk the winding path back down to the city center. It takes about 45 minutes.

Weather Warning

Bergen gets a lot of rain and fog. Low clouds will completely block the view. Check conditions before you buy a ticket. The summit restaurant and café charge steep prices for average food. Bring a snack instead.

Purchase tickets through the official app to skip the ticket office line. Visit before 9:00 AM or after 6:00 PM to avoid the cruise ship crowds.
