Hattvika sits on the edge of Ballstad harbour, a cluster of 1880s fisherman's cottages alongside a row of modern hillside cabins built in 2020. The property has been in the same family for six generations. Guri Bøe grew up here. She and her husband Kristian now run the place with a small team, and that family-operation feel is the first thing you'll notice. Staff might text you aurora alerts at midnight. Someone will carry your bags through the snow. Check-in is a narrow 16:00 to 17:00, so let them know your arrival time in advance, but they'll sort out late arrivals with a key arrangement.
Book the hillside cabins
The traditional cabins are red-painted, waterfront, full of history on the outside and completely modern inside: proper kitchens with ovens, big showers, heated tile floors, comfortable beds. Some have two bedrooms. The hillside cabins are a different experience entirely. Freestanding wooden pods on a rocky outcrop above the harbour, floor-to-ceiling windows facing the sea and mountains. Gorgeous to look at, gorgeous to look out of. But no kitchens. You get a fridge and a Nespresso machine, and breakfast at FANGST is included. Specifically book Cabin 8 for the best harbour and northern lights views. Book early.
One thing worth knowing: some of the lower waterfront units face the Möller's cod liver oil factory across the bay. Ballstad is a working harbour, and the factory has been part of the village since 1852. Ask for a unit that doesn't face it if the view matters to you.
There's a harbour-view sauna and an outdoor hot tub, though access can depend on your room type. Confirm when booking.
FANGST
The on-site restaurant is the reason some people book here. FANGST runs seasonal tasting menus built around whatever the boats bring in that day, plus reindeer, local lamb, and foraged herbs. The kitchen has its own fish landing quay. Three-course and longer tasting menus are available, with a wine pairing option. The chefs come out to present each course. Fine dining prices, and worth booking a table even if you're staying somewhere else in Ballstad. Open evenings only, roughly 18:00 to 21:00, and closed some days in winter. Book ahead.
Breakfast is a solid buffet: cold cuts, fresh bread, local cheeses, fruit, yoghurt, and cod liver oil if you want the full Lofoten experience. Included for hillside cabin guests. Rorbu guests pay around NOK 300 per person.
Ballstad and the location
Ballstad is a fishing village of about 800 people in Lofoten. There's a Joker supermarket five minutes on foot. The village sits roughly in the middle of the Lofoten archipelago: Nusfjord, Reinebringen, and Henningsvær are all within an hour's drive. Leknes, with its Vinmonopolet and better shopping, is 15 minutes by car.
Hattvika vs. the alternatives
Solsiden Brygge Rorbuer is the other well-known property in Ballstad, right on the harbour. Thirty modern rorbu apartments with kitchenettes, good beds, and sea views towards Skottinden. The on-site restaurant focuses on seafood and Neapolitan pizza. Solsiden runs at roughly half the price of Hattvika's hillside cabins. The staff are friendly, the breakfast is good, and the apartments are well maintained. It's a comfortable base without the boutique personal-service feel. Pick Solsiden if you want a well-equipped apartment in Ballstad without paying premium prices, and you're happy to do your own thing rather than have someone plan your days.
For an alternative in a more similar quality/price range, Nusfjord Arctic Resort is 45 minutes south-west. The entire village functions as a curated destination: restored 19th-century rorbuer, a spa, multiple restaurants including a pizza tavern carved into a cave, and an art gallery in a former fish salting house. Nusfjord has the strongest food programme of any rorbu property in Lofoten and operates year-round. The cabins are smaller than Hattvika's, and the standard rooms can feel tight for the price. Pick Nusfjord if dining variety and a polished resort experience matter more than the personal, owner-operated feel you get at Hattvika.
Pick Hattvika if FANGST is high on your list and you want an owner-run property where the staff actively help shape your trip. The combination of heritage rorbu and the modern hillside cabins gives you more flexibility than either Solsiden or Nusfjord, and the central Vestvågøy location keeps the whole archipelago within reach.
