Bunks at Rode

A rooftop terrace with city and fjord views at hostel prices, in a clean, modern building next to Oslo's hipster neighborhood.

An 11th-floor rooftop terrace with panoramic views over Oslo and the fjord, and you're paying hostel prices. That's the hook at Bunks at Rode. The place looks and feels more like a budget boutique hotel than a backpacker joint. Scandinavian minimalist design, clean lines, everything new and spotless.

The dorm beds are enclosed pods with blackout curtains, reading lights, and USB ports. You get more privacy than in most hostels, which matters when you're sharing a room with strangers. The whole building is modern and well-maintained.

The location is the trade-off. This is Rodeløkka, a quiet residential area on the northern edge of hipster Grünerløkka. Walking to Oslo Central Station takes 30 to 40 minutes. The #30 bus stops nearby and runs straight to the city center, so it's manageable, but don't book this expecting to stumble home from Karl Johans gate. Grünerløkka itself, with its coffee bars, vintage shops, and parks like Birkelunden, is a short walk south.

There's a Kiwi supermarket on the ground floor of the building. The shared kitchen, though, is basically a microwave. No proper stove for dorm guests. Breakfast isn't included. Luggage storage costs extra.

Not central, but the #30 bus is your lifeline. It stops right by the hotel and goes directly to the city center and the Bygdøy museum peninsula without transfers.

Rodeløkka is quiet and residential, a few minutes' walk north of hipster Grünerløkka's bars and cafes. Not the city center, but the neighborhood plenty of restaurants, bars and bakeries, and actual locals instead of tourists.
