Fløibanen upper station

Full panorama of Bergen's peninsula, harbour, and surrounding fjords. Hiking trails start right at the top.

The Fløibanen funicular drops you 320 meters above Bergen in under eight minutes. Step off and you're on a viewing platform looking down at the city peninsula, the harbour, and the surrounding fjords and mountains. So does everyone else on those three cruise ships in port.

Hiking trails in several directions. A few hundred meters past the platform on any trail and the tourist crowd vanishes. Skomakerdiket is a small lake just a short walk from the station. In summer they offer free canoe rentals there. The Trollskogen nearby has carved wooden trolls and obstacle courses, mostly for kids. The Vidden hike connects Fløyen to Mount Ulriken across the ridge. Full day commitment.

Cashmere goats graze near the station in summer months. They're calm and used to people.

Skip the upper station café. Prices are steep and the food is unremarkable. Eat in town before or after. Low clouds or heavy rain will completely blank out the view. Check conditions before you commit.

Highlights

The panoramic view over Bergen from 320 metres is right there at the upper station. On a clear day, the fjords and surrounding mountains stretch out in every direction.
Skomakerdiket lake is a short walk from the station and offers free canoe rentals in summer. The crowds thin out fast once you leave the viewing platform.
Walking down the paved zigzag path takes about 45 minutes and passes through quieter viewpoints. Saves queuing for the funicular and costs half the price.
